The groups of the Instituto de Filosofia of Universidade do Porto have worked for years in an outstanding manner in the field of Portuguese philosophical research. This impression is currently given by the centre as a whole. Both the organisational design and the coordination of the teams can be used as a model, and the Committee is happy to say that the public presentation of the studies (for which unfortunately there was little time) was with all probability the best out of all those the Committee was able to listen to during the visits, due to its clarity of design and direction, as well as to the coherence of the objectives, group interconnection, doctoral student training and international projection of the programmes.
Following the logical operation of the Institute, it would be ideal for the current dedication to Ancient Philosophy to grow in proportion with that which exists in the fields of Medieval, Modern and Contemporary Philosophy. Out of these last mentioned fields, the first directed by Professor Maria Candida Pacheco, has already achieved international recognition, making it a reference group with full competence in Europe. With regards to the second field, directed by Professor Maria José Cantista, the Committee would like to express its admiration for the effort she has undertaken to expand and diversify her fields of work in a sense that appears to converge with the totality of European philosophical research. In addition, another group that stands out is Filosofía da Educacão (Philosophy of Education) for its originality in its field approach; although, precisely for this reason, the Committee encourages that they make a greater effort in internationalising their research findings in a manner that would enhance their public presence and their capability of discussion in a larger space.
Given the vast task, mainly that of archiving and cataloguing, that some of the programmes mentioned herein have ahead of them, the Committee greatly recommends an increase in the subsidies set out for the Instituto de Filosofia da Universidade do Porto, in line with the request made by its Coordinator, Professor José Francisco Preto Meirinhos, and the Committee relays it as highly favourable to the Foundation.
